Baby dolls FAQs

What are the origins of Barbie?

The Barbie doll was first created in 1959. This was by Ruth Handler, who co-founded Mattel. Her daughter was named Barbara, influencing the doll's name. It was during the American Toy Fair in New York City that this fashion doll was first introduced to the world.

What are bisque dolls?

The term "bisque" refers to unglazed porcelain. The process for creating these involves the material being molded and then baked within a kiln. Such material was commonly just used for the head. From the late 1800s to the early 1900s, most of the dolls created in Germany and France had these types of heads. Other dolls may have made use of the substance for half or all of the limbs. Even less common was the practice of creating a full porcelain body, or all-bisque doll.
